When Did it happen?
After Darfur became independent in 1956 it had two prolonged civil wars because conflicts formed from economic, political and social domination of non-Muslim, non-Arab Sudanese. Once North and South Sudan found out about the oil in Darfur they became very interested. The first civil war ended between North and South Sudan 1972. The second one started in 1983 and ended in 2005 with a Comprehensive Peace Agreement that gave South Sudan political power. Darfur remained undeveloped and marginalized at that point and still is to this day.
In February of 2003 a rebel attack on the Sudanese Air Force Base at North Darfur occurred. It was caused from a combination of the accusations of the Janjaweed being armed by the government and neglect of Darfur falling apart. Many peace talks were held but the one most successful talk took place in Abuja in 2005-2006 that lead to a Peace Agreement.
In early 2008 The UN created a United Nations -African Union mission (UNAMID) to keep the peace in Darfur. On March 4, 2009 the International Criminal Court issued a warrant for the arrest of Sudanese President Omar Bashir for crimes against humanity. In July of 2010 ICC issued a warrant for his arrest on charges of genocide but the government of Sudan does not recognise the ICC and to this day ignores the rulings.
